Ranger women claim Texas Intercollegiate title

Only days after a paperwork issue forced the Ranger College women's golf team to forfeit a win in their season-opening meet, the Lady Rangers put a W in the win column by dominating Texas Wesleyan University's Texas Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Fort Worth.

The RC women had three players, including Noppasom Far-alun, Maria Sanz and Jirasuda Khunarak, finish in the top five individually, as they rolled to a win at the 54-hole tournament which was held at Hawks Creek Golf Course. The Lady Rangers turned in a three-day total of 950, and finished two strokes ahead of Texas Wesleyan.

Ranger found itself sitting in second at the conclusion of the first two rounds, trailing Region 5 rival Western Texas College by two strokes, 626-628. WTC's Chayenne Chivrac gave the Westerners the boost they needed on the first day of play by outshooting Far-alun, 79-77, over the first 18 holes.

RC rallied to take the title with a stellar effort in the final round. The Lady Rangers carded a 322 over the final 18 holes and finished 10 strokes ahead of WTC, which fell to third in the standings with a round of 329. Texas Wesleyan shot a 319 in the final round and moved into second in the 8-team event.

Far-alun rebounded from a tough first round. She carded rounds of 74 and 76 on the final two days and finished in a tie for third in the individual standings with Sanz, who posted rounds of 79, 75, 75 to finish with a 13 over par 229.

Khunarak tied for fifth with a score of 230. She turned in rounds of 77, 73 and 80. Her round of 73 on Monday tied for the lowest mark recorded on any day of the event. Texas Wesleyan's Annaka Watts, who also carded a 73 on Monday, also finished at 230.

Kayla Paulsen and Alicia Barron rounded out the Lady Rangers' outing. Paulsen finished in a tie for 25th with a three-day score of 262. Barron was 33rd at 276.

The RC women will return to play on March 21 when they travel to Trophy Club to compete in Texas A&M-Commerce's Lion Invitational.
